Short answer: what is my stairlift’s display telling me?
A stairlift’s display is a status indicator first and a fault indicator second. Most of the characters it shows during normal life are telling you where the lift is in its charging cycle, or that one of its safety interlocks is open because the seat is swivelled, the footrest is up, or the key switch is off. These clear themselves the moment the condition is corrected.
A smaller group of codes reports a real hardware fault in the motor, brake, relay board or charger. Those are deliberately not user-serviceable. A stairlift is classed as machinery rather than a lift under UK law, and the safety systems producing these codes are the reason it is allowed to carry a person up a domestic staircase at all. The tables below are transcribed from manufacturers’ own published documentation for three of the most common UK models. Find your model first, because the same character means different things on different lifts.
Acorn Superglide 130 display codes
Transcribed from the Acorn Stairlifts user manual for the Superglide 130, published by Acorn Stairlifts. Acorn and Brooks share this control platform on several models, but confirm against the manual supplied with your lift.

The four checks that clear most codes
Across all three manufacturers, the same small set of interlocks accounts for the majority of “it has stopped and it will not move” calls. Work through these in order before you book anything.
- Check the key switch and the battery isolator. A blank display is almost always a power problem. Acorn shows E9 and Stannah shows 4 when the key is off, and the isolation switch on the carriage should be left on permanently.
- Check the seat is locked facing forward in its travelling position. Acorn reports E6 here and Stannah reports 7. A seat left swivelled at the landing is the single most common cause of a lift that appears dead.
- Lower the armrests and the footrest. Stannah reports 5 if the downside armrest is up, and a raised footrest will hold the lift on most models.
- Look along the track and the safety edges. Acorn’s E1, E2, E4 and E5 and Handicare’s 4 and 6 are all pressure strips reporting something in the way. Check the full length of the rail as well as the area around the carriage, and look underneath the footrest.
If a code persists after all four, or if the lift stopped mid-flight with someone on it, treat it as a fault and book a call-out.
When to stop and call an engineer
Stop using the lift and book a call-out if any of the following apply.
- The code is an F on an Acorn, or 9 or F on a Stannah, or any of d, E, F, G, H, L or y on a Handicare 2000. These report the brake, relays, motor current or main board.
- Acorn’s F7, the overspeed governor, has triggered. That device exists to arrest an uncontrolled descent. Do not ride the lift again until it has been inspected.
- The lift moves but sounds different, judders, or stops short of where it used to stop.
- A charging code will not clear after a full night parked on a charge point. Batteries are a consumable and a failed pack is the most common non-trivial repair. Our guide to stairlift batteries covers replacement intervals and costs.

Why published code tables disagree with each other
While compiling the tables above we compared several widely circulated stairlift fault code guides against the manufacturers’ own documents. They do not consistently agree, and the differences are not trivial.
The clearest example is Acorn’s C4. Acorn’s own Superglide 130 manual defines it as “Battery fault. Charger connected but not charging.” Code tables published elsewhere list C4 as meaning the batteries are fully charged. Those two readings lead to opposite actions: one sends you to book an engineer, the other tells you everything is fine while a charging fault goes unattended.
A second pattern is invented code formats. Handicare’s own quick reference guide uses single characters, so a relay fault displays as d, E or H and a brake fault as F or G. Several third-party tables list codes such as “H1” and “F1” for the same lifts. Those combinations do not appear in the manufacturer’s guide at all.
Stannah’s 600 codes, by contrast, were reproduced accurately in the third-party guides we checked, which suggests the problem is how these tables get copied from site to site.
The practical consequence for a stairlift owner is simple. A code table is only trustworthy for the exact model it was written for, and the manual that came with your lift outranks anything published online, including this page. If you no longer have it, the manufacturer will supply a replacement, and most publish them free as PDFs.
How we checked these codes
Every code in the three tables above was transcribed from a document published by the manufacturer of that lift. Each one was fetched and read in full, and none of the codes here were copied from another guide:
- Acorn Superglide 130: the user manual PDF published on the Acorn Stairlifts UK website.
- Stannah 600 Siena: the “Looking after your stairlift” consumer document published on Stannah’s own resources domain.
- Handicare 2000: the Handicare-branded Quick Reference Guide, version 2.1.
Where a manufacturer document and a third-party guide disagreed, we recorded the manufacturer’s wording and noted the disagreement. We did not average the two. We have not tested these codes on a physical lift, and we do not repair stairlifts, which is why every fault-side entry sends you to an engineer instead of a workaround.

Frequently asked questions
Why is my stairlift beeping?
On most models a repeated beep means the lift is parked away from its charging point and running on battery alone. Acorn’s manual notes that the unit gives a single beep when it reaches a charge point, so a continuing beep means it has not docked. Drive it fully to the top or bottom landing until the beeping stops and the display changes to a charging code. A beep accompanied by a flat battery code is different and needs attention.
Will my stairlift work in a power cut?
Yes, for a while. These lifts run from an internal battery pack that the mains charges, so they keep working through short interruptions. Acorn’s manual is explicit that the supply should be left permanently connected and switched on, and that letting the batteries run down is not covered by warranty.
Is there a standard set of stairlift fault codes?
No. There is no shared standard across manufacturers. The digit 1 means “charging or battery fault” on a Stannah 600 and “requires charge” on a Handicare 2000, while Acorn uses letter-and-number pairs and Handicare uses single characters. Always match the table to the model.
Can I reset a stairlift myself?
Turning the key switch off, waiting, and turning it back on will clear a latched interlock on most lifts once the underlying condition is corrected. That is the limit of what an owner should do. Repeated resetting of a fault that keeps returning is masking a problem the safety system is correctly reporting.
How long do stairlift batteries last?
Most packs last several years, and a charging code that will not clear after a full night on charge is the usual first sign. Acorn separately recommends replacing the 9v battery in the remote control handset each year, which is a different and much cheaper job.
