Stannah’s history

Stannah is one of the UK’s leading stairlift providers with a business that can trace its origins back 150 years. In 1867, Joseph Stannah founded a business moving goods around London’s docks. The founder gained a hard-working ethos and ps founder with the well-recognised Stannah Stairlifts.

Stannah is a global family-run business with an annual turnover of over £210 million. It also employs around 1700 people across the UK.

Five generations have now been of Stannah’s at the company’s helm. Each has passed on the traditional family values that allowed Joseph Stannah to succeed in his first business venture.

Today, Stannah is one of the UK’s best-known stairlift manufacturers. In addition to stairlifts, they also produce loading and service lifts, platform lifts, and home lifts. Stannah has continued to invest in its product range over the decades.

Stannah’s values

Stannah puts the values at the core of its company front and centre.

With Stannah Stairlifts, the care that goes into their designs is evident immediately. The company produces a range of different stairlifts. There is a Stannah Stairlift for every stairway configuration you can think of. Being flexible enough to provide service to any customer, regardless of individual circumstances, is very important for Stannah.

A stairlift must fulfil all the requirements and needs of its user. But customers also like to have a good product in their home that matches the surroundings. Stannah Stairlifts are available in a range of different styles and designs. So there is a Stannah model to suit most homes.

As well as being available in a range of colours. Each chair has a vinyl seat and a compact design. Stannah is also committed to affordability with options to suit a range of budgets. Stannah Stairlift prices are published on its own price list, which is unusual among UK stairlift manufacturers.

Stannah stairlift quality and design

The marketplace for stairlifts in the UK has become somewhat crowded in recent years. This can make it seem intimidating for a first-time buyer trying to compare the options on the market. The good news is that increased competition has given stairlift manufacturers the impetus to refine their designs. This improves the practical use of the product

and leads to more attractive stairlifts which blend into their surroundings and are less intrusive to a home’s decoration scheme. This means that Stannah prices reflect both the quality of the components and the attention paid to how the lift looks.

The increased competition has driven some manufacturers to try to shoehorn in unnecessary gimmicky features. These end up making the chairs bulkier and less easy to use. Instead, quality manufacturers like Stannah have focused on ensuring that their stairlifts contain the essential features and make them as user-friendly as possible.

Stannah set itself apart from the competition with the durability and resilience of its products. Stairlifts must be adjustable for users of any size and shape. However, in stairlifts of inferior quality, these components, which you can adjust, are the most likely to fail.

Faulty parts render the machine inoperable and, therefore, present a severe problem for users with minimal mobility; they can cause serious injury. With a Stannah Stairlift, you can ensure that every piece is made from the highest quality components and will keep the user safe long into the future.

Stannah stairlift features

Stannah’s Stairlifts come with all the features one would expect from a good quality stairlift; they can be adjusted to seat any user. They can come with a powered swivel seat. The flexibility they offer here truly sets them apart from the competition.

The vinyl-backed seats are among the most comfortable available, and they are hard-wearing and made from high quality materials. The seats provide good lumbar support and hold up well over time. The seat comes in five vinyl colours. With the five vinyl colours to choose from, you can be sure that it will not look out of place.

Stairlifts that are poorly designed can take up an unnecessary amount of space and ultimately spoil the look and feel of a room. Stannah designs look good in use, and they fold away flat against the wall so they intrude very little in any room.

Folding and unfolding a Stannah Stairlift is easy. Even people with very limited mobility can fold it without difficulty.

Similarly, the joystick that controls the chair’s motion has been carefully ergonomically designed to be easy to use but not overly sensitive; only a gentle movement is needed to start the chair moving.

A rechargeable battery continuously recharges itself, which means that a Stannah Stairlift is always ready for operation. Included with most models is a remote control which allows the stairlift to be called to the user.

Stannah stairlifts come with safety sensors; they mean that your stairlift won’t hit anything when using it. Stannah offers this with most stairlifts. This is especially good for narrow stairs and narrow staircases as there is very little room, so there could be more collisions. The stairlift stops automatically if it meets an obstruction, which is especially useful on narrow staircases.

With a Stannah stairlift, you can get different rail colours for your stairs. Rail colours will mean you can make your stairlift blend into your stairs. It may seem simple, but it will make a massive difference. The installation team can also help you pick the right rail colour.

The Stannah Starla

The Starla is Stannah’s model for curved stairs, including staircases with several bends. Stannah presents it as a blend of style, comfort and advanced safety features.

The controls are simple for users of all abilities. A comfortable seat, adjustable armrests and a secure seatbelt give safety and support on every journey. The slim twin rail is custom-built to the contours of your staircase, so it fits neatly.

There’s a choice of upholstery and colour options to suit your home’s style. The result is a stairlift that fits the look of your home without feeling clinical.

Stannah stairlift safety

It is a significant concern when dealing with stairlifts and similar products marketed mainly at people with limited mobility who may already be vulnerable. Stannah stairlifts offer products that adhere to the very best safety standards practised in the industry.

As you would expect from any stairlift, Stannah stairlifts feature an easy-to-operate kill switch, which can instantly stop the stairlift if necessary.

You might wonder, ‘how much is a Stannah Stairlift, and is it worth it for me?’ A Stannah is a strong choice if you are looking for a reasonably priced, reliable and well-designed product. Stannah also gives a free stairlift quote or consultation, so you can make an informed decision without any pressure.

Over the last century and a half, the company has built itself up and refined its methods and product ranges until reaching the industry-leading level it is at today.

The installation process

Stannah describes its installation process as straightforward, efficient and stress-free. It says its experienced team installs every stairlift safely and precisely.

It starts with a thorough look at your staircase, whether it’s straight, curved or particularly narrow, to find the best solution for your home.

Fitting typically takes a few hours. The stairlift is fixed to the stair treads, so nothing is attached to the wall. Stannah’s installation team handles the details, and once fitted the lift is ready to use straight away.

Local service and support

After installation, Stannah services its lifts through local branches across the UK. These branches handle everything from routine maintenance to urgent repairs, so your stairlift keeps running properly.

Stannah says you can count on prompt, reliable support from a dedicated local team wherever you live. Branch teams are on hand to answer questions, give advice and provide the support you need. Stannah presents its service network as a source of peace of mind, with help never far away.

How long do Stannah stairlift batteries last?

Most stairlift motors’ battery life is anywhere from 2 years to 5 years before they need to be changed for a new battery. The usage is different in each case. It can affect a customer’s energy levels if there is a faulty charger. That is why having your stairlift serviced regularly is good for keeping track of the health of your stairlift battery.

Stannah Stairlifts reviews

Stannah has a long history of curved models for curved stairlifts and spiral staircases. Its outdoor stairlifts open up access to the rest of the property. With a protective cover, you can be sure one lasts all year round and stays safe.

Stannah also offers reconditioned stairlifts, which it presents as a high-quality, lower-cost option. Straight stairlifts generally take less time to install than curved models, which makes them a convenient choice for many homes.

Your final price after a home survey depends on several things. Curved stairs cost roughly double straight ones. Rail length matters, and so does the warranty level.

Stannah vs Acorn: price comparison

Stannah and Acorn are the two most-searched stairlift brands in the UK. Stannah publishes its own prices and Acorn doesn’t. So the fairest comparison sets Stannah’s price list against what UK sellers advertise for Acorn.

Stannah starts from £3,585 for a new straight stairlift and £7,134 for a curved one (Stannah price list, checked 5 September 2026). UK sellers listed the Acorn 130 straight at £1,595 to £2,895 in August 2026.
